Educational Visit to OM Abode, Karjat

Prof. Dr. Sharmila Ghuge and Asst. Professor Sneha Rajivkumar Nair organized a visit to OM Abode (A school for special children in Karjat) with the intention of executing a plantation drive. A student of our college, Dr. Sunil donated 6 Fans and 6 LED bulbs. The faculty and students planted 385 vegetable saplings donated by Prof. Dr. Sharmila Ghuge.

Visit to City Civil and Sessions Court Greater Bombay

On October 19, 2023, students and faculty from Jitendra Chauhan College of Law embarked on an educational visit to the City Civil and Sessions Court Greater Bombay. The visit was organized by Assistant Professor Navanitha Warrier and was ac- companied by Assistant Professor Poorva Dighe and Assistant Professor Sneha Nair. The visit was coordinated by Student Coordinator Ritesh Chavan. The purpose of this visit was to provide students with a practical and firsthand insight into the workings of the Indian legal system and the court proceedings at the City Civil and Sessions Court.

A visit to the District Legal Services Authority and Metropolitan Magistrate Court at Mazgaon was organized by JCCL’s PEHEL – Umeed Ki Nayi Leher – Para Legal volunteers on 31st October, 2023 for II & III LL.B. students.

VISIT TO THE BYCULLA DISTRICT JAIL CLASS- 1 FOR MEDICAL CAMP

On 9th December, 2023 Legal Aid Committee of SVKMs Jitendra Chauhan College of Law in collaboration with District Legal Services Authority and Priyadarshini Foundation had organized a free medical camp in Byculla district jail for women prisoners. Dr. Ujjay Jadhav and his team along with other qualified medical professions explained various precautions which need to be taken to maintain personal hygiene. Apart from that one-on-one sessions were also conducted to solve other medical queries of the prisoners.A full body checkup was conducted which included:

Blood pressure checkup / Diabetes checkup / Eye checkup etc.

Student volunteers helped the medical professionals in every aspect possible. By the end of each checkup, the prisoners were provided with free essential medicines as well. There were in total 80 prisoners who received medical assistance through this camp.A great opportunity for students volunteering to have real time experience through this camp. Successfully providing free medical assistance to over 80 prisoners.

On 21st March, 2024 visit to Cooper Hospital was to gain insight into the workings of its forensic department and to understand the process of conducting a post-mortem examination. Led by Dr. Sachin Sonawane, Dr. Chancey Wood and Dr. Shivkumar Kolhe, the visit aimed to provide us with practical knowledge and exposure to the field of forensic science.

Furthermore, the opportunity to interact with the professionals at Cooper Hospital, including Dr. Chancey Wood and Dr. Sarah Al-Hinwani and yourself, allowed us to gain insights into the challenges and advancements in forensic science. Your willingness to share your knowledge and experiences with us is truly commendable and deeply appreciated.

The prison visit was a valuable educational experience for the students, offering insights into the realities of the correctional system. It provided an opportunity to foster empathy, understanding, and a broader perspective on the challenges faced by inmates in the prison.

DELHI EDUCATIONAL TOUR

The objective of the tour organized by the law college was to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of various aspects related to the legal fraternity, educational institutions of high value, and tourist places of historical significance, as well as those famous within the locality. The tour was intended to enable the students to gain practical insights into the legal profession by visiting institutions such as Supreme Court of India, Indian Law Institute & the Judicial Academy. This exposure will allow students to witness real-world legal proceedings and understand the functioning of the legal system firsthand. Tourist places of historical significance will be explored, allowing students to appreciate the rich cultural heritage and historical developments of our nation. Students will be familiarized with tourist attractions that are popular within the locality. Opportunities will be created for students to engage with professionals, experts, and peers in the legal field. Networking events, seminars, and collaborative activities during the tour will encourage dialogue, collaboration, and the exchange of ideas, enhancing students' professional development and future career prospects. Overall, the tour aims to offer a multifaceted learning experience that combines academic, cultural, and social elements, empowering students to become well-rounded individuals and future legal professionals with a deep understanding of the legal fraternity and its broader societal context.

Visit to Solicis Lex Law Firm

To enhance skills of students and introduce students to Interviewing techniques and Pre-trial preparation. Adv. Ameet Mehta  addressed II LL.B and  III LL.B  students of JCCL  and shared his experience and expertise  on Interviewing Techniques and pre-trial preparation and a role-play of a client counselling session for a criminal and civil case was also conducted. This session gave the students a glimpse of the working of a law firm, client counselling and pre-trial preparation, all important experiences for a law student not only from the perspective of practical training but also a step towards their future as advocates inputs. Visit to Solicis Lex Law Firm was organised by Dr. Chhaya J. Shah on 4th & 6th September, 2023.

On the 13th of October 2023, a group of Third Year students from Jitendra Chauhan College of Law, along with three faculty members, had the privilege of visiting the High Court of Bombay, one of India's most prestigious and historic judicial institutions. The visit was organized by Assistant Professor Navanitha Warrier and was accompanied by Assistant Professor Poorva Dighe, Assistant Professor Sneha Nair, and attended by a total of 40 students. The visit was coordinated by Student Coordinator Ritesh Chavan. The visit encompassed the observation of court proceedings, a tour of the High Court museum, and an exploration of the Judges' Library.

A visit to the Maharashtra State Legislative Assembly was organized by Assistant Professor Sneha Rajivkumar Nair with the assistance of Adv. Vikrant Parshurami and Dr. Prof. Sharmila Ghuge on 2nd August, 2023. Twenty Six students of T.Y. LL.B. registered for the same and were accompanied by Dr. Prof. Sharmila Ghuge, Assistant Professor Navanitha Warrier, and Assistant Professor Poorva Dighe in addition to Assistant Professor Sneha Rajivkumar Nair.

VISIT TO LOK ADALAT
VISIT TO LOK ADALAT

National Legal Services Authority along with other Legal Services Institutions conducts Lok Adalats. Lok Adalat is one of the alternative dispute redressal mechanisms, it is a forum where disputes/cases pending in the court of law or at pre-litigation stage are settled/ compromised amicably. Lok Adalats have been given statutory status under the Legal Services Authorities Act, 1987. Under the said Act, the award (decision) made by the Lok Adalats is deemed to be a decree of a civil court and is final and binding on all parties and no appeal against such an award lies before any court of law.

Lok Adalat’s are not only an integral part of the Indian Legal system but also, are a crucial part of the Practical Training I and Practical Training II of Three year LL.B. Therefore, Asst. Professor Poorva Dighe, the Faculty In-charge of ADR Committee with the assistance of Adv. Vikrant Parashurami organized a visit to the National Lok Adalat held at the Motor Accident Claims Tribunal, Fort to provide lawstudents with an opportunity to witness and understand the working of the Lok Adalat.

LEGAL AWARENESS PROGRAM AND DONATION DRIVE AT JUVENILE JUSTICE HOME A.K.A. CHILDREN’S HOME, DONGRI

The Legal Aid Committee of SVKM’s Jitendra Chauhan College of Law in collaboration with District Legal Services Authority has organized a donation drive at the Juvenile Justice Home at Dongri. The purpose of this initiative was to celebrate Diwali with the children at the Juvenile Justice Home, bringing joy to their otherwise challenging lives. The visit took place on the 9th of November 2023, during which the team generously contributed food, sweets, clothing (including innerwear), and essential stationary items. The most gratifying result of the visit was witnessing the radiant smiles on the children’s faces as they spent time with the students and received Diwali gifts.

DEMO NEGOTIATION

The Demo Session on Negotiation for the batch of S.Y. LL.B. and T.Y. LL.B. was organized by the Alternate Dispute Resolution Committee under the guidance of Faculty In-charge Asst. Prof. Poorva Dighe on 11th September, 2023, from 5:30pm onwards in the Moot Court Room.

The objective of the session was to acquaint students with the idea of Negotiation and to introduce them to Negotiation competitions. The session was conducted particularly for the benefit of the students interested in participating in the Intra-Collegiate Negotiation Competition and was focused on explaining to them the concept of negotiation, the skills developed through Negotiation competitions, the objective behind negotiations and the approach to be adopted whilst negotiating.

The Event commenced with an explanatory session on Negotiation which was delivered by Prof. Poorva Dighe. It was followed by instructions on the rules and regulations of the Intra-Collegiate Negotiation. The session ended with a live demonstration of a negotiation between two teams who came prepared on a sample problem. The demonstration was to help students better understand the nuances of a negotiation competition.

57th A.D. Shroff Memorial Intra Collegiate Elocution Competition was organized by Dr. Chhaya J. Shah on 12th September, 2023 in Moot Court Room. The competition was judged by Prof. Madhulika Mundra, Prof. Usha Andewar and Prof. Sheela Natarajan.

INTRA COLLEGE WAR OF WORDS COMPETITION

The intra-college debate competition on the topic of ‘Whether same-sex marriage should be legalized in India?’ was a pivotal event aimed at fostering critical thinking and legal analysis among students. Hosted by the Lexpress Committee at JCCL, under the guidance of our I/c Principal Dr. Priya J Shah and Faculty in-charge Prof. S. V. Rajadhyax, the competition served as a platform for participants to examine significant legal cases pertaining to same-sex marriage rights. This competition took place on 23rd March 2024.

INTRA- COLLEGIATE MEDIATION COMPETITION
INTRA- COLLEGIATE MEDIATION COMPETITION

The Intra- Collegiate Mediation Competition for the batch of all three years was organized by the Alternate Dispute Resolution Committee under the guidance of Faculty In-charge Asst. Prof. Poorva Dighe on 26th February 2024, from 2:45 pm onwards in the college premises. A total of 10 teams comprising of 30 participants registered and confirmed their presence for the Competition. The Competition commenced with the draw of lots and was followed by the Preliminary Round. The Preliminary Round was conducted in 5 classrooms and was judged by Asst. Prof. Navanitha Warrier, Adv. Himansshu Samant, Prof. Krupa Naik, Prof. Minal Sharma, Prof. Kalyani Buche, and Prof. Hardik Pathak. The conduct of the Preliminary Round resulted in the top 2 teams scoring the highest marks competing in the Final Round. The Final round was conducted in the Moot Court Room and was graced by the presence of Adv. Shivam Kakadia as the judge.

On 23rd October 2023, a skill development program on “Fundamentals of writing a research paper” was organised for First year LL.B. students in the Moot Court Room. The session was conducted by Mrs. Sneha Rajivkumar Nair Assistant Professor at Jitendra Chauhan College of Law; the faculty in-charge of the research and development cell. The objective of this session was to introduce the fundamental of writing a research paper and to discuss crucial aspects of selection of a topic, conducting literature review, understanding the structure of a research paper, including defining research questions, objectives, methodology, and expected outcomes.

Writing is an important part of life, whether at School, College, University or at the workplace. This task is known to enhance critical thinking, creative thinking and helps in organizing thoughts and improve communication skills. It also assists in drafting professional arguments about a topic and articulate opinions. It is essential that every student develops good writing skills and continuously works on improving it. With this objective the Research and development cell organized an essay writing competition on 6th October 2023.

The Intra- Collegiate Negotiation Competition for the batch of SYLLB and TYLLB was organized by the Alternate Dispute Resolution Committee under the guidance of Faculty In-charge Asst. Prof. Poorva Dighe on 16th September, 2023.

The demo moot is a demonstration of a moot court competition, the case law selected for this demonstration was an issue involving “Right of Transgender persons for marriage and surrogacy” the issue was deliberately selected to intrigue the interest of rookie law students as it was a hot topic during the time as the Hon’ble Supreme Court of India had recently pronounced its judgment on a similar issue. Students were provided with a soft copy of the moot problem a day prior in order to ensure that they could get an understanding of the case.

The Moot court committee of Jitendra Chauhan College of law organized Demo Moot activity under the guidance of Prof. Navanitha Warrier on 21st October 2023, targeted towards first year students of the academic year 2023-24.

INTRA COLLEGIATE EXTEMPORE MOOT COURT COMPETITION
INTRA COLLEGIATE EXTEMPORE MOOT COURT COMPETITION

The Moot Court Committee organised an Intra Collegiate Extempore Moot Court Competition on the 10th and 11th October 2023.It was the committee’s first Intra Collegiate Competition for the Academic Year 2023-24. This competition was different from regular Moot Court Competitions as in this Competition the Moot Proposition was given just 20 hours before the oral round. The Student Co- Ordinator for conducting this Competition was Abhishek Avate (Committee Member). A total of 16 teams comprising of students from Second Year and Third Year participated at this Competition. Hereto annexed and marked at “Annexure I” are the details of participants.The Competition commenced with Draw of Lots followed by Preliminary Rounds in Classroom No. 1 to 4 between 3.30 PM to 5.00 PM which served as Court Room No.1 to 4.

The Judges for the Preliminary Rounds were Mrs. Sushma Mhaske, Adv. Minal Sharma, Ms. Poorva Dighe and Mrs. Sneha R. Nair. A total of four teams qualified for the Semi Final Rounds. Hereto annexed and marked at “Annexure II” are the details of the participants that qualified for the Semi Final Round. After the declaration of Results the Draw of Lots for Semi-Final Round(s) was conducted followed by the Semi Final Round(s) in the Moot Court Room between 5.30 PM to 6.45 PM. The Judge for the Semi Final Round was Dr. Sharmila Ghuge.

 

A total of two teams qualified for the Final Rounds. Hereto annexed and marked at “Annexure III” are the details of the participants that qualified for the Final Round. After the declaration of Results the Draw of Lots for Final Round was conducted on the 10th October 2023. A separate Moot Proposition was given to the participants for the Final Round.

On 2nd September 2023, a guest lecture on "India's Changing Digital Landscape: Data Protection and AI" was organized at the Moot Court Room, Jitendra Chauhan College of Law. The lecture was delivered by Mr. Gokul Narayan, the Chief Operating Officer of the Asian School of Cyber Law, and was organized by Asst. Prof. Sneha Nair. The objective of the lecture was to provide insight into the evolving digital landscape of India and to discuss the crucial aspects of data protection and artificial intelligence (AI) in this context.

GENDER SENSITIVITY AWARENESS PROGRAM

On 7th October 2023, the Research and Development Cell of Jitendra Chauhan College of Law organized a program at Alpha Junior College of Commerce and Science – for the 11th and 12th standard students of the commerce section. The topic selected was “Gender Sensitization and Nurturing Inclusivity”. The objective of this session was to create awareness of the various types of genders that people identify themselves with as of today, the stereotyping that takes place with respect to gender roles, the inequality present today against certain genders, the role that movies, advertisements and other forms of media have in promoting or demoting gender equality, and the general tasks that students as members of the society can take up to promote gender equality.

To conduct this session student members of the Research and Development Cell were divided into two groups, each group prepared a short skit, followed by talks on different segments of the topic. The student members also created posters and placards, which were used as visual aids to promote a more lively and interactive session.

Ms. Manasi Amdekar shared her experience and expertise on Mental Health and its importance. She explained about issues related to Mental Health and how to tackle them and also gave clarity for the same. She also discussed about ways to fight Mental Health issues. Understanding Heart Health: Dr. Sunil Jatania provided an in-depth overview of heart health, emphasizing the significance of a healthy heart and its impact on overall well-being.

Risk Factors: The webinar discussed common risk factors for heart diseases, including lifestyle choices, diet, and genetic predispositions. Dr. Jatania elaborated on how these factors can contribute to heart-related issues.

Preventive Measures: Participants were educated about effective preventive measures to maintain heart health. This included guidance on healthy lifestyle choices, dietary recommendations, regular exercise, and stress management.

Medical Insights: Dr. Jatania shared medical insights on identifying early signs of heart issues and when to seek medical attention. This information was vital for participants to recognize potential risks and symptoms.

On behalf of SVKM's Jitendra Chauhan College of Law, we welcome you all to the workshop on the Right to Information, organised in collaboration with Public Concern for Governance Trust. We would like to introduce resource person for the RTI workshop, none other than Mr. Shailesh Gandhi, former Central Information Commissioner and a leading RTI activist.

Mr. Shailesh Gandhi is a first-generation entrepreneur and a Distinguished Alumnus awardee of IIT Bombay. Driven by his passion for transparency and accountability, Mr. Gandhi sold his company to become an RTI activist.

He was part of the National RTI movement which was involved in drafting the National Act. He was the convener of the National Campaign for People’s Right To Information. He has used RTI and also trained many citizens and government officials in over 1000 workshops to use it.

The only RTI activist to have been chosen as a Central Information Commissioner, he disposed of a record of over 20000 cases in 3 years and 9 months and ensured that most cases were decided in less than 90 days. He gave many landmark decisions on RTI, apart from organising the first digital paperless office in the Commission.

Mr. Gandhi is passionately pursuing the cause of evolving ways for a time-bound justice delivery system and improving governance systems. Amongst many awards, he has been awarded the Nani Palkhiwala Civil Liberties Award, the MR Pai Award, and the Narayan Varma Memorial Award. He has published a book: RTI Act- authentic interpretation of the Statute and a paper critiquing Supreme Court judgments on RTI.
